Nobody writes about writers quite like Toby Thompson. Gretel Ehrlich or Gary Snyder, Thomas McGuane or Hunter S. Thompson…If you’re interested in the personalities behind some of your favorite books, his new anthology, “Riding the Rough String,” is chock full of quick insights, sharp wisdom, and painterly descriptions.
Taking advantage of this newfangled thing-a-ma-bobber they call ebooks, Bangtail Press is delighted to excerpt three of Toby’s marquee profiles–novelist James Lee Burke, adventure writer Tim Cahill, and western novelist and essayist William Kittredge–and offer them for a limited time at a fire-sale price.
For those who haven’t read Toby’s work , this is a great opportunity to introduce yourself to one of America’s finest chroniclers of the West…

Thomas McIntyre’s The Snow Leopard’s Tale, a work for which we ran out of adjectives a long time ago (exceptional doesn’t do it justice, extraordinary falls short, mind-blowing is closer to the thing…we could go on), has received some well-deserved review attention in the Billings Gazette.

Upon the anniversary of his beloved father’s passing (October 10, 2008), Paul Zarzyski is briefly allowing the digital version of his groundbreaking memoir/self-interview to be available for a free download.
For fans of Paul’s verse, this creative piece of autobiography offers unparalleled insight into the creation of the poet and his poetry. For those who are unfamiliar with Paul’s work, it’s a compelling, artful read, and one that pushes all the envelopes in terms of what an artistic form can accomplish.

In their fall issue, the award-winning magazine Montana Quarterly publishes glowing reviews of both Riding the Rough String, by Toby Thompson, as well as A Quiet Place of Violence by Allen Morris Jones. MQ unfortunately doesn’t have a significant web presence, but look for the magazine on newsstands. In addition to the reviews, there is also a profile of Billings-based novelist Craig Lancaster, a short story by Tom Groneberg, and a great series of profiles by Scott McMillion, “The 10 Most Influential Montanans You’ve (probably) Never Heard Of.”
